第二部 第八課: to bomb , to mess up
- Michael 這個美國學生今天好像什麼事情都不太順當。他的中國同學李華也發現他好像有心事。到底是什麼事呢？你聽了 Michael 和李華的對話就知道了。他們在對話中會用到兩個美國年輕人常用的說法，一個是 to bomb；另一個是 to mess up。

- Michael, 怎麼啦？你好像有心事哎。
- I think I just bombed my history test. I don't think I'm going to pass.
- 哦～，你怕剛才歷史測驗會不及格啊。唉，沒必要，這又不是大考。哎， Michael，你剛才說什麼 "bombed my history test" ， Bomb, b-o-m-b, 這不是炸彈或爆炸嗎？哎，你可別開這樣的玩笑啊，現在大家啊對安全問題很敏感的。
- No, I said I bombed my test, that means I did very poorly, and probably will get a very low mark.
- 哦～，考得不好，分數低，這我都聽懂了，就是那個詞 bomb 用在這裡有點怪耶。我想，這就是中文裡說的考試考糊了吧。哎，那除了考試以外還能用在哪裡呢？
- Well, sometimes we might say a movie or a play "bombed". That means that no one wanted to see it, and it probably lost a lot of money.
- 哦～，還可以指電影或話劇太次，沒有人要看，賣座率太低。我上個星期啊去看了個電影，劇院裡沒幾個人。後來我才看到報紙評論說這部電影太糟了。我能不能說："The movie I saw last week bombed"?
- Sounds like it bombed to me. Remember the play we went to a few weeks ago? Oh~, the actors were terrible!

- 你說什麼呀？他們把你的漢堡包怎麼啦？
- I told them not to put onions on my burger, but they forgot. Therefore I said they "messed up my order". I can also just say "they messed up."
- 哦～，你叫他們不要放洋蔥，他們忘了。所以，to mess up 就是做錯了事，對不對？
- That's right.
- Michael 啊，Mess up, 這是怎麼拚的呀?
- Mess, m-e-s-s, Up, u-p. Also, "to mess up something" can mean to break or damage something.
- 哦～，to mess up something 還可以指把什麼東西弄壞了。昨天啊，和我同房間的同學跟我借自行車，等她還我的時候，自行車的鏈子斷了。我是不是可以說："She messed up my bike"？
- Sure! Hey, you'd better tell her to buy you a new chain.
- 對啊，我是讓她去買新鏈子了，可是她說都是我不好，讓她差一點沒出嚴重的車禍呢！

- 哎喲，她就是那樣的人，上回啊她還把借來的電視機給弄壞了呢！
- She messed up the TV she borrowed? Ah! You don't need a roommate like her.
- 雖然她弄壞了我的自行車，其他方面她還是挺好的啦。哎，Michael 啊，那～你能不能幫我修自行車呢？
- Well, I'm really out of luck today. I bombed my test, they messed up my burger, and now I have to repair your bike!
- 這算什麼倒霉呀！沒幾分鐘你就修好了嘛。我先謝謝你囉！
