  • Obama to Announce First Phase of Afghanistan Troop Withdrawal

  •   President Barack Obama is set to announce on Wednesday the first phase of a withdrawal from Afghanistan that could see up to 10,000 U.S. soldiers leave the country by the end of the year.

  •   Defense officials have been quoted as saying that Mr. Obama will call for an initial withdrawal of 5,000 troops, followed by an additional 5,000 by the end of 2011.

  • China Stakes Out China Sea Position For US Talks

  •   A senior Chinese official says he will deny Chinese responsibility for disputes in the South China Sea if the issue comes up during talks with the United States this week.

  •   Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai said the issue is not on the agenda for his talks on Saturday in Hawaii with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.
