- China Defends Databases on Foreign Journalists

- China is defending its decision to collect information on foreign journalists covering the 2008 Beijing Olympics, saying the information will be used to help the media, not to hinder reporting.
- 中國為收集採訪 2008 年奧運會外國記者信息的決定進行辯護，稱這些資料是用來幫助媒體，而不是妨礙報導。
- A media official for Beijing's Olympic organizing committee, Li Zhanjun, told reporters Tuesday that the database was not created to monitor or threaten journalists.
- 北京奧組委負責媒體事務的官員李湛軍星期二對記者說，建立這套資料庫並不是為了監視或者恐嚇記者。
- Li also said it was not a blacklist and stressed that coverage at the Games would be open and transparent.

- Meanwhile, Chinese officials denied state-run media reports Monday that the government had created a database of some 30-thousand accredited Olympic Games reporters.

- Japan says it wants progress on a long-standing dispute with China over the development of gas fields in the East China Sea before Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda visits China.

- Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura said Tuesday the date of Mr. Fukuda's visit has not been decided.
