  • Republicans Win Sweeping Victory in US Elections
  • The Republican Party has taken control of the U.S. House of Representatives from President Barack Obama's Democratic Party, part of a sweeping mid-term election victory fueled by voter anger over unemployment and government spending.

  • Republican candidates won at least 60 seats in Tuesday's election, far more than the 39 seats needed to take control of the House.

  • Republicans also made significant gains in the U.S. Senate, although Democrats held on to a slim majority.

  • The sweeping change in the balance of power presents a strong challenge to President Obama's agenda, including a health care bill passed earlier this year against strong Republican opposition.

  • The Obama administration has also been sharply criticized for its handling of the economy.

  • Earlier, the president called Republican leaders, including Representative John Boehner, to say he looks forward to working together with them.

  • Boehner is expected to be the next speaker of the House of Representatives.

  • One of Mr. Obama's strongest allies, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, was able to survive a strong challenge from Republican Sharron Angle, who was backed by the influential and conservative Tea Party movement.

  • US Central Bank Set to Boost Economy Again
  • The U.S. central bank appeared ready on Wednesday to start pumping hundreds of billions of dollars into the American marketplace in hopes of boosting the nation's sluggish economy.

  • Economic analysts say they expect the Federal Reserve's policy-setting committee to release more money into the economy, a policy called "quantitative easing."

  • The Federal Reserve would buy $500 billion or more in U.S. government securities over a period of several months.

  • Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke has advocated the plan as a way to put downward pressure on long-term interest rates paid by businesses and consumers to borrow money.

  • That could make it easier for consumers to increase spending, and for businesses to hire more workers at a time when nearly one of every 10 U.S. workers is unemployed.

  • But critics say the plan might not have much effect on the economy and might generate another economic ill, higher inflation.
