第九部 第六課: birds of a feather , to feather one's own nest
- 今天我們要講的兩個習慣用語裡，都有一個關鍵的字．那就是： feather． Feather 就是鳥身上的 “羽毛”．既然羽毛跟鳥有關係，那麼我們就先來講一個和鳥有直接關係的習慣用語： birds of a feather． Bird 就是 “鳥”，後面加一個 s 就是指多數，或者是各種類的鳥．同樣種類的鳥一般身上都有相同的羽毛．這就是 birds of a feather 的字面含義．在用做俗語的時候， birds of a feather 是指人，而不是指鳥了． Birds of a feather 的意思是：“各種特性很相同的人”．這跟中文裡說的 “物以類聚、人以群分” 的意思很相似． Birds of a feather 這個俗語經常是含貶意的．下面就是一個例子，這是一個爸爸在擔心他兒子經常結交的朋友：
- I wish our boy wouldn't hang around with that crowd! They're birds of a feather - they don't care about getting a job; all they do is drink beer and chase girls.
- 他說：“我希望我兒子不會跟那群孩子經常混在一起．他們都屬於一個類型，對於有沒有工作根本不在乎，他們所關心的就是喝啤酒和找女孩子。”
- 每個人身處在一個集體當中的時候都會發現跟某些人合得來，跟某些人合不來．下面是一個公司的僱員在跟一個朋友說公司裡的事：
- I've worked in this office for a couple of years and I can get along with all my colleagues except two. One is able to lie with a straight face and the other likes to play sneaky tricks. They're really birds of a feather.
- 這個人說：“我已經在這個辦公室工作了兩年，除了兩個人以外，我跟所有的同事都相處得很好．那兩個人，一個騙起人來臉不變色．另一個人喜歡搞陰謀詭計，他們真是一路貨。”

- 我們再來給大家講解一個以 feather 這個字為主的習慣用語．有些鳥用別的鳥脫下來的毛來鋪墊自己的鳥巢，使得自己的巢既暖和又舒適．我們要講的第二個習慣用語就是從這種現像而來的． to feather one's own nest． Feather 在這裡是用做動詞． Nest 就是 “鳥巢”，因此，從字面來解釋， to feather one's own nest 就是 “用羽毛來鋪墊自己的巢”．在說到人的時候， to feather one's own nest 就是 “先考慮自己個人的利益”，而把別人的利害放在次要的地位上． To feather one's own nest 一般是用來形容那些 “假公濟私、不顧公眾利益的政府官員”．下面這個例子是一個電臺記者在說一個大城市的市長：
- The newspapers are really after the mayor - they've dug up some evidence he's feathering his own nest by taking money under the table from companies doing work for the city government.
- 這個記者報導說：“各家報紙的報導確實都是針對市長的．它們發現了一些證據，證明他偷偷地從那些為市政府工作的公司那裡接受賄賂。”
- 美國公眾對政府官員愈來愈感到失望，但是這也不能一概而論．下面這個例子是一個選民在表彰他們州的州長．他說：
- Our governor is a very compassionate man. He and his wife even donated their own private money to fund a shelter for homeless people. He's totally different from those politicians who only want to feather their own nests.
- 這個人說：“我們的州長是一個非常有同情心的人．他和他的夫人甚至用自己的錢捐了很多給一個收容無家可歸的人的機構．他跟那些只想圖自己利益的政客是完全不同的。”
