- Michael 和李華今天坐地鐵去書店買書，現在他們正在地鐵上． Michael 今天會教李華兩個常用語： jerk 和 street smart。

- Michael，我們是這一站下車嗎？
- Yeah.
- 哎喲，這人怎麼回事兒啊，直往人群裡擠．在紐約，一般人都會站在一邊好讓別人下車的。
- People are usually a lot more courteous. That one guy was a real jerk.
- 對啊，人們一般都很有禮貌的．那個人真討厭．疑？你剛才說他是什麼來著啊？
- Jerk. j-e-r-k, Jerk is someone who is mean and inconsiderate.
- 哦喔～，原來 Jerk 就是很粗魯，不顧別人的人啊．那依我看，好多人都是 jerk 呢．有的人開車，在靠近別人車很近的地方硬要擠到別人前面去．像這些人啊，也可以說他們是 jerks，對不對？
- They certainly are. But be careful, this word is very mean.
- 哦，真的啊，叫人 jerk 是很不禮貌的啊，那～，用這個詞的時候可真是要小心哦．哎， Michael，謝謝你告訴我，否則啊，我要是隨便叫人 jerk，那可真是會出問題呢！
- See that man across the street? The one who's shouting and yelling at the little girl? He must be a real jerk.

- Well, I grew up in the city. I guess you could say I'm street smart.
- 我知道你是在紐約長大的．可是你說你是 street smart？ Street 是街道， smart 是聰明，疑？這兩個詞放在一起是什麼意思呀？
- It means I know how city life operates, I know how to deal with different situations. Street is spelled s-t-r-e-e-t, and Smart, s-m-a-r-t.
- 哦～， Street smart 就是知道在紐約生活應該怎麼樣處置一些事情，應該要如何應付各種不同的情況．疑？那麼， street smart 是不是就和保護自己，不讓壞人襲擊也有關係呢？
- Yes, being street smart also means you know how to be careful, for example, at night time.
- 哦～， street smart 也是指一個人應該知道怎麼樣小心，比方說晚上在外面活動的時候．要是你在紐約或是在北京，都應該知道在地鐵上如何防止小偷，那也能稱為 street smart，對不對？
- Yes, that would be street smart. For instance, if you walk at night, you've got to be alert if anyone is behind you.
- 對，晚上啊，在外面走路是要注意後面有沒有人，有的話，要觀察這個人是不是另有企圖．哎， Michael 啊，你去中國好幾次了，你在中國是不是也很 street smart 呢？ 比方說，在中國買東西的時候往往是可以討價還價的．你是一個外國人，他們大概會對你提高價格吧？
